A test bed of experimentation, Batch 1, A New Wave, was an exploration into a number of new creative possibilities and challenges for the studio. For the first collection, Catherine and Matt posed the studio three challenges: to throw bigger; to include more expression in form; to explore the nature of the curve.

The collection pivots around a statement piece - ‘Autumnus’ - a bold, sculptural and modular vase which can be used in three ways ways. This is the biggest piece of thrown ware the studio has yet produced, and coupled with the logistical and exacting requirements of needing to fit together, the challenges faced to create these were no small feat.

Something less stately is the ‘Jenny Bowl’, softer, full of individual expression, these bowls are an offering of personality and exploration of playfulness. The piece is named after Matt’s mum, Jenny, for whom the developed prototype was created as a gift after an evening of discussion on form over a bowl of ramen. T

The Shadow Mug’ takes the form of the Studio’s 350ml tapered mug design,  thrown in a pale clay and slip decorated, inspired by the shards of sunlight and shadow streaming through the studio’s skylight in the afternoons.

Opening up the experimental collection for limited pre-order, rather than ready-to-ship, allows the Studio to make without creating waste.

Each piece will have an individually painted maker’s mark, to tie the piece to the exact time of its creation. .

Ours is a slow craft. It’s one of the things we love about what we do. But I find myself in a constant state of apology to our customers and clients for how long pieces can take to make. How beautiful it could be if we turn this upside down and invite our customers in to our world - for them to invest in something special, where they receive regular updates and service information about the pieces we are making for them. Where the wait is all part of the experience.

Step 2

Place your pre-order. If you are gifting the piece, select at checkout. We will email you with information about glaze options and if for a gift the recipient will be sent a card with further information. As we are keeping order numbers small, there will be a level of dialogue between us to make the experience tailor-made. For certain forms, such as the ‘Autumnus’ vase, a printed glaze pack can be posted to you.

We contact you to ask which glazes you would like, discuss any other requirements and will start making your order, sending visual updates via email regularly. Each piece will have a hand painted maker’s mark to tie it to this collection. 8 weeks later your piece will be posted out to you - by the 14th November at the latest.
