Glaze Guides

We work with about eleven different glazes usually and two different blends of clay bodies: pale stoneware and flecked stoneware.

We throw with both a local flecked clay and a pale clay. The flecked clay is more heavily grogged and will fire to a darker colour with flecks of iron. The pale clay is purer and paler when fired. Many of our glazes look the same or similar on both clays but there are some differences. Please select the colour options below to read more.

The work we fire in our electric kiln we tend to refer to as our ‘standard ware’ and there are seven usual glazes: speckled white, ochre, nori, olive, powder, sand and charcoal.

We also fire a gas kiln - not as often, and usually we include one-off pieces or experimental pots. There are four main glazes we use: shino, celadon, tenmoku, pale blue chun and chun. These glazes tend to have more variation and are less repeatable, but for these reasons can be extra special.

When pre-ordering items you can choose your clay body and then choose your glazes. If you’d like to receive a glaze swatch pack before ordering, they can be purchased here (these are complimentary for all made-to-order commissions).
