Festive Pop Up Shop: An Area Guide

Throughout November and December we are opening our workshop doors to the public, which feels at once terrifying and exciting. I love having guests in the studio, especially when we’ve had time to tidy up and make everything look beautiful. Think beautiful pots, homewares, lots of greenery and perhaps a glass or two of something mulled.

But now that we have moved workshop to a very rural location I thought I’d pop together a guide of places to visit and things to do in the local area, as I expect many of our visitors will be travelling especially.

Where to find us? Pottery West, Unit 9a, Bullhouse Mill, Lee Lane, Sheffield, S36 9NN - we’re the last unit on the right as you go all the way around the one way system. we have plenty of parking here.

When? November Sun 23 / Sat 29 / Sun 30 and December Sat 13 / Sun 14 / Sat 20 / Sun 21

11am -3pm

Outdoors

Our new workshop is nestled beside the vast and dramatic backdrop of the Pennines and so naturally there are lots of places to explore. We are just off the Trans Pennine Trail (perfect for cyclists) - just need to exit at ‘Bullhouse’ and follow the path down the side of the hall down to the workshop units. (It can be a bit muddy). Cyclists might also be interested to note that our friends’ shop Cycle Works Yorkshire is just ‘down the trail’ from us in Penistone.

We are also close to Langsett Reservoir, Royd Moor and the Penistone Circular Walk. This book by Christopher Goddard contains some lovely walks and information about the local area. Here is a journal post from a few year’s back with some imagery from the surrounding landscape.

Culture & Shopping

We are a 20 minute drive away from the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and about 30 minutes from The Hepworth Wakefield.

Holmfirth is a ten minute drive from us too, which is home to many great independent galleries and shops, including Fair Trader, The Sculpture Lounge , The Whippet and Pickle (where our friend Scott from Drip serves amazing pour over coffee). and The Booth House Gallery and Pottery - to name just a few. Our opening on the 23rd November coincides with a craft fair in the beautiful church of our local town, Penistone.

Also in Penistone is a lovely little re-fill and maker’s shop All is Good, Wool Monkey and Sewcial Sewing haberdashers. Over the hill one direction we have a really excellent deli and butchers J Brindon Addy and the other direction towards Sheffield Bradfield Brewery.

For something a bit different and very festive, a few of the pubs in a few of the villages on the way to Sheffield, such as Dungworth and Oughtibridge, have the ‘Sing’ - local carols in the pub.

On Saturday 29th there is the local tractor run happening and the Penistone lights switch on.

Food

In Holmfirth there are so many great places to eat. If you can get a place at Adam Reid’s supper club at the Whippet and Pickle that is great! Joro is relatively close also. Foodie lovers might also take note our studio neighbours are the inimitable Field Blends…. On the way over the Sculpture Park you’ll find Cannon Hall Museum and Cannon Hall Farm (which has a great farm shop and is a fun day out.)

Cosy

If you can get a booking, the nearby spa at Smallshaw is just beautiful. Sitting in a sauna looking out over the hills is my idea of fun! I couldn’t not mention Penistone’s independent cinema also, one of our favourite places to watch a film.
