Jar in Shino with Yew Lid
Jar in Shino with Yew Lid
Ceramic jar wheel-thrown in a pale stoneware and glazed in a shino type glaze, reduction fired, The glaze has lots of variation, with flashes of orange and black carbon trapping.
19cm h x 18.5cm ø (at widest point to nearest half cm)
Part of an edition of eleven jars, a collaboration between Pottery West and Neil Whitelaw. He says about the choice of wood for this lid:
When I saw the shino glaze in the workshop I immediately thought that yew would compliment the jar. I tried to pick pieces with swatches of different colour and some darker elements. The yew was from Yarm where my pal Karen used to do the garden in a big house.
Each jar in the collection is completely unique with its corresponding lid turned at the lathe in Neil’s Sheffield workshop.
